What is Implantation Bleeding?

Implementation bleeding during menstruation

Implantation bleeding is light bleeding that can occur approximately six to twelve days after fertilization at the time of implantation. This bleeding is usually caused by the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining which then contains a large amount of blood. Implantation bleeding can be an early sign of pregnancy, but some women mistake it for menstrual blood or scanty periods because it can happen when they are expecting their period. This is a normal phenomenon in pregnant women, but many of them have no idea what it is.

What is Implantation Bleeding?

Implantation bleeding occurs when the fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus, it is called implantation. Implantation bleeding is a small effusion of blood that a small percentage of pregnant women observe about six to twelve days after fertilization.

In fact, after fertilization of the egg, the sperm begins a journey of three to four days between the fallopian tube and your uterus. During this time, it divides into hundreds of identical cells. During this time, your ovaries release estrogen which causes the lining of the womb (endometrium) to thicken and blood vessels to grow. The uterine lining prepares to accommodate the growing egg that will soon become an embryo.

Once the egg is inside the uterus, this embryo is called a blastocyst, a tiny ball of several hundred cells. A few days later, the embryo begins to lodge in the uterine wall where it continues its development. By penetrating the endometrium, the embryo can cause the bursting of blood vessels leading to small vaginal bleeding.

Is This A Sign Of Successful Nidation?

Implantation is the process by which the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine lining. This is the first stage of pregnancy and usually occurs between 6 and 12 days after fertilization.

During implantation, a small amount of blood may be released, which can cause light bleeding called implantation bleeding. This bleeding can be mistaken for menstruation, but it is usually lighter and shorter in duration.

It is not very common and a woman may not notice it, but it can be a sign of successful implantation. It is important to remember that these signs are not reliable and you should use a pregnancy test or see a doctor to be sure.

How Long Does Implantation Bleeding Last?

Implantation bleeding tends to happen during the week before your period when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall. Unlike normal periods, implantation bleeding usually doesn't last longer than a day or two. This is the time it takes for the fertilized egg to implant itself in the wall of the uterus.

Implantation Bleeding Symptoms

Besides implantation bleeding, some women may also experience other symptoms:
  • Mild cramps
  • nausea
  • breast tenderness
  • Lower back pain
  • frequent urination
  • Mood swings
  • Tiredness
  • Headaches

Note that these symptoms do not guarantee pregnancy. They may simply be a sign of ovulation or premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Are Implantation Bleeds Common?

According to some studies, about 15-25% of women experience implantation bleeding. Some women may think they are having a light period when they see this bleeding and not realize they are pregnant.

How to tell the difference between implantation bleeding and menstruation?

To tell the difference between menstrual blood and implantation bleeding, you can refer to a few specific signs.

  • The amount of blood

Implantation bleeding is much lighter than normal menstruation. It is usually a small amount of blood released by your body to a few drops of blood. In this case, strings of rules can be more than enough to protect you effectively in the event of small untimely bleeding.

  • La Duree

Most women experience menstrual bleeding for three to seven days during their period although this can vary from woman to woman depending on the cycle. For its part, implantation bleeding often only lasts between one to three days maximum.

  • The colour

Menstrual blood during menstruation is usually bright red or dark red in color, but implantation bleeding tends to be light pink to brown.

  • Consistency

Many women bleed long enough during their period that some of the blood clots to become slightly gelatinous. Implantation bleeding is too light to have time to clot.

How Soon After Implantation Bleeding Can I Do A Pregnancy Test?

Implantation bleeding is usually nothing to worry about. If you notice bleeding around your expected period and think you might be pregnant, take a pregnancy test. Some pregnancy tests are sensitive enough to detect the pregnancy hormone in your urine 6 days before your missed period.

However, if you test too soon, you risk getting a false negative because the amounts of the pregnancy hormone (HCG) may be too low to detect, even if you are pregnant.

Should I See A Doctor?

A little bleeding in early pregnancy does not necessarily mean there is a problem. Many women regularly have spotting in the first trimester for no apparent reason and continue to have completely normal pregnancies.

However, bleeding or cramping in early pregnancy may indicate more serious problems. If in doubt, make an appointment with your doctor or gynecologist.
